Competition Is about Winning

Who thinks that participating into a competition is not about winning is totally wrong! Competitions are all about winning. Even if the only thing that you win is the experience of participation, the goal is the same. Which brings me to the first H1 Area Conference that took place in Brașov. For me the theme was “First Time”. It was my first Toastmasters conference that I attended. Such an event is on a different level than our regular meetings when

I Am a Champion

Yes, I know, I didn’t win the first place in the Area H1 Romanian Humorous Speech Contest. However, I am a champion because I did something new and I learned new things about myself and about my interaction with the audience. I saw that I can make people feel good and laugh. I am a champion because I have competed. My goal was not to be better than the other speakers, but to be better than I was yesterday. And

The Awesome Team

This September, I was given the opportunity to be part of “The Awesome Team” that made the first H1 Area Conference possible in Brașov. It all started about a month ago when our thoughtful Club President, Roxana Cârceag, also known as Rox, asked me if I was interested in helping with the upcoming Area Conference. It peaked my interest and shortly after the meeting Andrei Popescu called me. He is a cool guy. He told me how my help was

First Impression – Catalin Paval

I’d heard about Toastmasters three years ago from PR Beta at a conference in Timisoara. Their Area 3 Governor, Raluca Moisi, kept saying after each speaker, “4 ahs, 6 pauses, 2 leanings on the table,” etc., and I had no idea what she was doing! Now I’ve joined a Toastmasters club, the place where she learned to effectively critique speeches. When I went to a Brasov Toastmasters meeting for the first time last month, I knew I wanted to be part of a group of people who

Happy 4th Birthday, Brasov Toastmasters!

On July 1, our club celebrated its fourth anniversary. We scheduled our birthday party for July 20 in Rinda’s garden in the old city center and hoped the sun would make an appearance. After the wettest spring and summer I can remember, the sun shone that Sunday afternoon (this always happens to good people!). Old members, new members, family, and new friends played games together, and enjoyed the fabulous food and each other’s company. It was a great afternoon sharing our latest news, laughing with friends, and being

Promises to Myself for This Toastmasters New Year

I have participated in three associations and found that boards come and go, sometimes making radical changes and sometimes making no changes. Toastmasters is no exception. Even though people come and go in our club, I’ve been surprised to see that certain traditions have been kept sacred. I still find what I first loved about this club, and this rarely happens. People have different opinions and views, yet we have not been torn apart by subjectivity. It’s been almost a year since I joined Brasov Toastmasters.

5MS

Outside of our weekly Toastmasters’ meetings, the only other public speaking event in Brasov is a onceamonth event called 5MS. I went to their December meeting for the first time only knowing that they had speeches with a five minute time limit. I was pleasantly surprised to see that the speakers took this seriously, and all of them were on time. When they spoke, a PowerPoint presentation changed automatically every fifteen seconds. I think it must be challenging to make a speech like this, but evidently, not impossible. After

New Year’s Eve in Ceai et caetera

New Year’s Eve is a great way to get to know your fellow Toastmasters better. Fortyfive members and friends shared food, fun, music, and karaoke at Anca’s intimate tea house Ceai et caetera in Schei. At midnight, fire crackers and many bottles of champagne added to the beauty of the moment when one year becomes another. We walked to Piata Unirii for the grand finale, the perfect animated place for our Toastmasters’ members and friends to make secret wishes for 2014, to kiss and hug, and to rock the
